Screening Process:

The Amana Developing World Fund seeks companies demonstrating both Islamic and sustainable characteristics.

The Fund’s adviser (Saturna Capital Corporation) considers issuers with sustainable characteristics to be those issuers that are more established, consistently profitable, and financially strong, and with robust policies in the areas of the environment, social responsibility, and corporate governance (“ESG”). The Fund’s adviser employs a sustainable rating system based on its own, as well as third-party, data to identify issuers believed to present low risks in ESG.

Islamic principles require investors to share in profit and loss, to exclude investments in prohibited activities, and to avoid speculation in favor of long-term investment.

Business sector and ESG screens eliminate companies primarily involved in certain activities including:

  • Interest
  • Gambling
  • Pork
  • Fossil fuel extraction
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
  • Pornography
  • Weapons

Financial screens eliminate companies with:

  • Greater than 5% of their revenue coming from haram, or unacceptable, sources (such as those listed above)
  • Greater than 33% total debt as compared to their market capitalization (trailing 12 month average)
  • Greater than 45% accounts receivable as compared to their total assets (trailing 12 month average)

The guidelines developed for the Amana Funds help ensure that investments meet the requirements of the Islamic faith and were established by Saturna in collaboration with the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA), a non-profit organization serving the Muslim community. To ensure that investments continue to meet the requirements of the Islamic faith, Saturna engages Amanie Advisors Sdn Bhd, a leading consultant specializing in Islamic finance.

Amana’s equity funds also support the fossil fuel divestment campaign by excluding energy extraction and refining companies.

Please consider an investment's objectives, risks, charges, and expenses carefully before investing. Please read the prospectus or summary prospectus carefully before investing.

Investing involves risk, including possible loss of principal. The Amana Developing World Fund limits the securities it purchases to those consistent with Islamic and sustainable principles. This limits opportunities and may affect performance. Fund share prices, yields, and total returns will change with market fluctuations as well as the fortunes of the countries, industries, and companies in which it invests. Foreign investing involves risks not normally associated with investing solely in US securities. These include fluctuations in currency exchange rates, less public information about securities, less governmental market supervision, and the lack of uniform financial, social, and political standards. Foreign investing heightens the risk of confiscatory taxation, seizure or nationalization of assets, establishment of currency controls, or adverse political or social developments that affect investments.

Performance data quoted represents past performance which is no guarantee of future results. Investment return and principal value of an investment will fluctuate so that an investor's shares, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than their original cost. Current performance may be higher or lower than performance data quoted. Standardized returns current to the most recent month-end can be obtained by visiting www.amanafunds.com or by calling toll free 1-800-728-8762.
